The Challenge International de Dieppe is an French youth "hors circuit" competition run every May by the Ligue d'Escrime Haut-Normande and open to fencers under the age of 15. It mainly attracts fencers from Northern France and the United Kingdom, with a contingent from the French Carribean.

Date

The Competition will take place on Sunday 18th May 2008. All events will take place on the same day. Accommodation will be available in Dieppe for the Saturday Night.

How to get to Dieppe

From the South of England
The easiest options are to take the ferry from Newhaven-Dieppe or drive down from via Dover-Calais using Transmanche Ferries ( tel + 44 (0)800 917 1201) The latter can offer rates as low as £35 for a car and its occupants. Sussex is served by Gatwick Airport, and a train line runs from there to Newhaven.
There is currently no return ferry to Newhaven on Sunday evening from Dieppe itself, but it is possible to go out on Newhaven-Dieppe on the Saturday, and return from Le Havre on the Sunday.

From Paris
The nearest aiport with international connections is Paris/Beauvais-Tille which is approximately an hour's drive away and is serviced by flights from many european locations by Ryanair www.ryanair.com and from Scandinavia by Sterling (Copenhagen) www.sterlingticket.com and Goodjet (Oslo, Malmö, Goteborg) www.goodjet.com Further afield are the main Paris airports of Charles-de-Gaulle. and Orly, but trains from these aiports to Dieppe involve crossing the city centre and travelling up via Rouen. Buses are also available.

Accomodation in Dieppe

A hotel list is available on the Taste of Dieppe website. The town is quite compact, so none of the hotels on the list is more that 10-15 minutes walk from the venue, but since the gymnasium lies at the top of a hill it is easier to drive or take a taxi.

Dieppe town council own a youth activity centre close to the venue and also up the hill, and are prepared offer to youth hostel style accommondation for the participants at a price of appproximately 13€50/£8 per person, but in order to secure this we need a firm commitment and an accurate estimate of numbers. Any British entrants who wish to take up this offer should send an entry form and an commitment fee by 20th April 2008 (closing dates for other nationalities by request.) The commitment fee of ten pounds per competitor will only be cashed in the event of the competitor failing to turn up and will be used to reimburse the hostel owner. Family rooms should be available, payment for the accommodation should be made during check-in.

Address: Centre Hébergement Les Roches, 73 Avenue Gambetta.
Tel 02 35 84 34 76. Les Roches is not a real youth hostel as previously explained. It is youth accomodation run by the Dieppe Council. It is therefore not possible to put people up on the Friday. However, should people require it, the address of the real youth hostel is : Auberge de Jeunese, 48 rue Louis Fromager. Tel 02 35 84 85 73.

Those using the youth accommodation should arrive between 4 & 5 p.m. on Saturday Afternoon.
