Here is a list of variations to consider when executing a beat attack. Consider the differences between them, when they might be used, and how they can be countered.

Variation of Timing

  1. Beat as preparation, prior to attack
  2. With a step, beat as front foot lands.
  3. With a step, beat as back foot lands.

Variation of Direction

  1. Beat the Inside of the Opponent's Blade
  2. Beat the Outside of the Opponent's Blade (Reverse Beat)
  3. Both inside and Outside (Change Beat)
  4. Beat underneath the Opponent's Blade (Beat Neuvieme)
  5. Beat above the opponent's blade (Beat with bind)

Variation of Pressure

  1. Light Beat
  2. Heavy Beat

Variation of Bladework

  1. Attack Direct
  2. Attack Indirect
    1. Via Disengagement
    2. Via Counter-disengagement
    3. Via Cutover
  3. Compound Attack
    1. with a One-Two
    2. With a doublé
    3. with a mix of lateral and circular actions.
