Against the list of variations to consider when executing a beat attack. Here is a short list of tactical considerations.

Variation of Timing

  1. For opponent who reacts readily to beats
  2. For opponent with intermediate raction to beats
  3. For opponent who reacts slowly to beats

Variation of Direction

  1. Standard Beat, to get a reaction.
  2. For use against opposite hander, or in a closed line with disengage
  3. Multiple beats to confuse direction of attack.
  4. To open up body target
  5. To open up body target (esp. with opposite hander.)

Variation of Pressure

  1. Receives light response
  2. Receives a heavy response

Variation of Bladework

  1. Only used at very short range.
  2. To avoid natural reaction to the beat.
    1. Against lateral "panic" parry
    2. Against circular "panic" parry
    3. To avoid either (but it is slower.)
  3. Multiple actions to outwit multiple reactions
  4. To confuse opponent by attacking with a "retreating" blade action
(but note the loss of Right of Way)
  5. To get around ordinary parry.
